How It Started...

Well, it just never
would have happened if there were no band called
Spock's Beard.
That's right, the existence of an obscure progressive rock band,
combined with the fact that they have a website with an active
online message
board is what made this all possible.
If you've never checked out Spock's Beard or their online community,
do yourself a favor and check them out, both the band as well as the
online community are populated by great people. The kind of
people you want to have as your friends, the kind of people you are
proud to call friends.
But back to how it started. I have to admit that when the idea
struck me, I didn't think it would fly. Right after the
Tsunami hit, my wife and I were talking about making a donation to
the Red Cross or something to help the Tsunami victims. I was
certainly interested in helping, but somehow, the Red Cross just
seemed so....ordinary.

So, when I posted my idea on the Spock's Beard message board, I was
sure to title my message "What if.....(tsunami relief
music CD)". Needless to say, I was stunned at the response!
The level of interest in this idea was amazing. Suddenly, I
had dozens of songs offered from various bands from around the
world, hundreds of dollars in pledges for financial assistance with
production and duplication of the CDs and artwork, and when Nick
D'Virgilio came onboard, I just knew it was going to be
something really special.
As we all sit in our comfortable homes, surrounded by our families, with our
full bellies and contented hearts, the lives of thousands and thousands of
people are hanging in the balance half way around the globe.
It is very easy to take everything for granted, isn't it? We have our homes
and our jobs and our cars and our checking accounts.....and most of all we
have our families and loved ones.
But what if.....? What if your life was
suddenly turned upside down? What if your home were destroyed with your
spouse and children inside? What if everything you had spent your entire
life working for was wiped out in just a few minutes?
That's just what happened to thousands
of people when the Tsunami struck in December of 2004.
In response to this unprecedented disaster, the musicians of the
Spock's Beard message board banded together to help the victims of
this terrible tragedy. We put together a compilation CD called The
Tsunami Projekt, filled with music from members of this very special
online community which we sold. 100% of the proceeds (just
over $10,000.00!) was donated to benefit the victims of the
Tsunami.
Who Did What...
-
For musical contributions see the
Music and Bands page
-
Barry Thompson (a.k.a.
KirksNoseHair) had the idea to put together the CD and created this web site with Brian's help.
-
Brian Cobb (a.k.a.
Brians Split
Personality) handled all of the engineering and
mastering for the CD (in his project studio:
Digital
Chemistry Music Studios) as well as the finances for the production.
-
Martin Kornick (a.k.a. Man In The Mountain) designed the artwork for the CD and this website
-
Darren Burns (a.k.a. CageNY),
arguably the most articulate member of our forum (who is also an
excellent musician and contributing a song to the effort), wrote
the liner notes about the disaster.
-
The wonderful people at the
Spock's
Beard message board supported this effort, bought many
CDs and provided valuable feedback throughout the entire
project.
